Most of the time I jump into projects feet first and with both eyes closed. That is exactly what happened with the creation of Southern Comfort. All I knew was that I wanted to create a comfortable little shop that would sell items that were cleverly created by hand. In my mind, though, most of those crafts would come from several other places...not my own sewing machine!
As a child, my mother made most of my clothes. I remember sitting for hours in fabric shops and being jabbed countless times by pins while trying on the products of her handiwork. Never did I think of myself as a seamstress...in fact, I wanted no part of the textile world! As fate would have it, however, in 1980 my husband and I were living in Scotland. While he was busy working, there was not much for me to do. Fortunately, a beginner's quilting class was enrolling not far from our home. That class was the beginning of a lifelong love for quilting.
My first quilt was for my daughter. It started as a twin size quilt, but ended up being a coverlet for the top of her bed. It was just perfect for nap time and she adored the soft feel of the material. She still has that quilt. It is 27 years old and has been very loved as can be witnessed by some of the faded pieces in the blocks like this one.
Since that time I have branched out into many areas of sewing and quilting. I even quilt with a sewing machine now instead of completely by hand. It seems I love this hobby! Would you believe I even made most of my daughter's clothes? Isn't that ironic? I guess I've come a long way!
What am I working on now? Well, many things. Today I finished a beautiful messenger bag, made a material basket to hold handmade pens, pieced together a few granny squares, and cut out material for another messenger bag. Today was very productive!
