What a busy week at Southern Comfort! This week saw the completion of two messenger bags, an order for two recipe potholders and matching dish towels, and a pretty cotton dress for a sweet little kindergartner.
I loved the way the flowered messenger bag turned out, so I made another! This one is made of canvas, as well, but has repeating geometric shapes. The strap is made from one inch nylon webbing and is adjustable. This bag is lined with gray Kona cotton and has two interior pockets; a large zipper pocket and one smaller pocket for quick retrieval of items. The bag is padded with foam to carry a laptop or tablet.
For quite some time, I have been experimenting with different ways of adding recipes to my potholders. After much trial and error (mostly error), I love the way these wonderful sets look. I think I like the sew in cotton printer sheets much better than the iron on. It just gives a more professional look and I am certain the recipe will stay on the potholder and wash well. It took a while to draw and get the appliqué just right for the dish towel, but the results were well worth taking my time. This order will be finished off with a red dish towel sporting an old fashioned coffee pot and cup.
My last project this week was a cute cotton dress for a five year old girl. The dress was made from a lovely pale green floral cotton fabric which complemented the child's olive complexion perfectly. I purchased a roll of sheer ribbon to use as the tie around the waist, but was not sure how to attach the ribbon. After much contemplation, I decided to sew the ribbon on along the waistline of the dress, only attaching the top in the center front with just a couple of stitches. In addition, I used the side seems of the bodice to sew the width of the ribbon to the dress. It turned out beautifully! My little customer was so pleased with her dress that she did not want to take it off! I love the pictures of her reading in the Patio Chair and the child's Adirondack Chair.
